The Maharashtra government has announced plans to roll out automated grain ATMs across major cities including Mumbai, Nagpur, and Thane. This initiative follows a successful pilot project in Nashik, where the Annapurti Grain ATM was inaugurated on October 17. The goal of these ATMs is to eliminate long queues at ration shops, ensure precise distribution of food grains, and reduce instances of pilferage and black marketing.

The Annapurti Grain ATM, developed with assistance from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has a storage capacity of 2,500 kg and utilizes Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication to dispense food grains. Beneficiaries can receive their entitled rations in approximately 30 seconds, making the process significantly more efficient. Currently, Maharashtra operates nearly 54,000 fair-price shops catering to over 7.16 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

As part of preparations for the upcoming Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the local administration has proposed the installation of 11 grain ATMs to serve pilgrims during the event. An official from the Food and Civil Supplies Department stated that the initiative is modeled after a similar system in Gujarat, aiming to enhance transparency and convenience in ration distribution while combating irregularities.

The grain ATMs are expected to particularly benefit vulnerable groups such as daily wage workers, migrant laborers, women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Integrated with the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) system, these ATMs will allow beneficiaries to access their food grain entitlements from various locations across the country. The machines are designed to operate 24/7, ensuring that beneficiaries can receive their full entitlements without delay.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is actively seeking locations for the installation of these ATMs in Nagpur, Thane, and Mumbai. The success of the Nashik pilot, which has already dispensed over 7,000 kg of grains to 336 ration cardholders, will be crucial in determining the scale of the rollout. The initiative is expected to revolutionize food distribution in the state, making it more accessible and efficient for all beneficiaries.
