In a shocking incident at Colors Hospital in Ajni, Nagpur, a three-year-old girl’s death triggered a violent mob attack on medical staff on Thursday. The chaos unfolded when relatives stormed the ICU, assaulting doctors and damaging medical equipment, as captured by CCTV footage. Hospital director Dr. Vinod Gandhi, who was directly involved in the incident, filed a complaint at the Dhantoli police station, where authorities confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) is being registered.
The young patient was admitted to the hospital with a weak pulse and difficulty breathing, just a day after doctors had recommended hospitalization due to suspected dengue fever. However, her family opted to take her home before returning to the hospital when her condition worsened. Following her death, allegations arose that the medical team had failed to provide timely care. Hospital representatives defended their actions, stating that the girl had been under consistent medical supervision for years and that they possess comprehensive digital records of her treatment.
Witnesses described a scene of pandemonium as the relatives of the deceased girl allegedly vandalized the ICU, shattering monitors and scattering medical documents. A doctor present during the attack recounted that as soon as Dr. Gandhi informed the family of the girl’s passing, they forcibly entered the restricted area and began assaulting the medical personnel, including women who reportedly joined in the violence.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the girl’s parents removed her body from the hospital without prior consent, leading to potential legal ramifications. Hospital officials stated that once the body left the premises without an autopsy, they could not accept it back. Later that night, the family approached the police demanding a death certificate and case documents, insisting they would return the body to the hospital. However, hospital authorities expressed concerns about possible tampering, refusing to issue the certificate without a postmortem.
The attack on medical staff has raised alarms about the safety of healthcare workers in Nagpur, where incidents of violence against doctors have been on the rise, particularly following adverse patient outcomes. Dr. Vasant Khalatkar, a prominent pediatrician and hospital director, emphasized the need for stringent action against such violence, stating that such incidents create an environment of fear among healthcare providers. As the situation unfolds, the medical community is calling for protective measures to ensure the safety of staff and patients alike.
