Calls for enhanced safety measures on the highway are intensifying.

In a tragic incident early Monday, two people were killed when a truck caught fire on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway, marking the third accident in a mere 11 days on this dangerous stretch. The accident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Talegaon Dashasar police, where the truck, transporting cabbage from Nashik to Patna, experienced a sudden tyre burst on the driver's side, leading to a catastrophic loss of control.

The driver, Ikhlas Khan Shahabuddin Khan, aged 22, from Palwal district in Haryana, was trapped inside the vehicle as it collided with the crash barrier and skidded along the road. The impact caused the diesel tank to rupture, resulting in a massive fireball. Another passenger, Jahul Khan Ali Khan, 25, also from the same region, tragically died while attempting to escape the flames, as he was thrown beneath a bridge during the chaos. Fortunately, the truck's cleaner, Sahib Saeed Khan, 18, managed to escape without injuries.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with fire brigade personnel arriving to extinguish the blaze. Sub-inspector Sudhir Gawande, along with his patrol team stationed on the expressway, alerted the Talegaon Dashasar police, who quickly reached the scene. The deceased were transported to the rural hospital in Dhamangaon Railway for autopsy, while the wreckage of the truck was cleared from the road, allowing traffic to resume.

This incident has reignited concerns over safety on the Samruddhi Expressway, particularly in the Dhamangaon Railway tehsil. Just weeks prior, on October 2, seven devotees tragically lost their lives in a separate accident involving a vehicle transporting a Durga idol. Additionally, on October 4, nine laborers were injured when a pick-up van overturned. These recent events have prompted renewed calls for a comprehensive review of safety protocols, surveillance measures, and emergency response strategies on this accident-prone highway.

As authorities assess the situation, there is a pressing need for immediate action to enhance safety measures on the Samruddhi Expressway. Stakeholders are advocating for improved surveillance, emergency response capabilities, and preventive measures to avert further tragedies on this critical transportation route.
