In a significant development, Nagpur Cyber Police have arrested twelve individuals implicated in a WhatsApp impersonation scam that resulted in a loss of ₹4.45 crore to an accountant. The arrests were made following a complaint lodged on October 16, which prompted a swift investigation by the authorities.

The victim, Amit Ghate, who works as an accountant for Kesar India Limited located in Sadar, Nagpur, received a message on WhatsApp from a number that appeared to belong to Yash Gopal Gupta, the owner of the company. The accused allegedly hacked Gupta's account and sent a message directing Ghate to transfer the substantial sum via RTGS, leading him to believe the request was legitimate.

Upon realizing the fraud shortly after the transaction, Ghate reported the incident to the police. The investigation revealed the extent of the scam and led to the arrest of the twelve suspects. As part of the ongoing investigation, police have successfully recovered ₹80 lakh of the defrauded amount, which is a significant portion of the total loss.

This incident raises concerns about cybersecurity and the vulnerabilities associated with digital communication platforms like WhatsApp. The implications of such scams extend beyond individual victims, affecting businesses and the overall trust in digital transactions within the region.

Looking ahead, the case is expected to proceed through the judicial system, with a charge sheet already filed in court. Authorities are likely to enhance their efforts in cybersecurity awareness and preventive measures to protect individuals and businesses from similar fraudulent schemes in the future.
