Pyare Khan Seeks ₹250 Crore in Defamation Suit Against Five
Maharashtra State Minorities Commission chairman Pyare Khan files a civil suit for defamation, alleging damage to his reputation during a protest.
Pyare Khan is suing five individuals for ₹50 crore each over defamation claims.
The allegations stem from a protest where placards accused him of visiting a gangster.
Khan is also seeking the removal of objectionable content from social media.
In a significant legal move, Pyare Khan, the chairman of the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, has initiated a civil defamation lawsuit against five individuals, claiming damages of ₹50 crore each. The suit was filed after a protest held on September 28, where Khan alleges that his reputation was severely harmed by defamatory statements made through placards. Senior division civil judge A D Karbhajan has issued notices to the defendants in this case.
The protest, organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in Mahal, featured placards that accused Khan of visiting notorious gangster Abu Salem in prison. These claims were linked to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, suggesting that Khan was a traitor, which he argues has caused significant damage to his social standing and reputation within the community.
Khan's legal action highlights the impact of social media, as he contends that the circulation of photographs, videos, and media reports related to the protest has exacerbated the defamation. He asserts that these materials have reached a broader audience, further harming his image and reputation.
In addition to the monetary damages, Khan is seeking a court order for the removal of the objectionable posts and videos from social media platforms. He is also requesting directions to prevent the further circulation of these defamatory materials and is calling for a public apology from the accused individuals.
As this case progresses, it could set a precedent for how defamation cases are handled in the context of public protests and social media. The upcoming hearings will be crucial in determining the outcome of Khan's claims and the potential repercussions for those involved in the protest.
