Pune-Nagpur Train Services Overwhelmed Ahead of Diwali 2023
The Pune-Nagpur route faces severe overcrowding as thousands struggle to secure train tickets during the Diwali festive season.
70 trains, including 66 special services, are fully booked for Diwali travel.
Waiting lists range from 177 to 250 for various trains from November 1 to 10.
Passengers demand more regular services on the Pune-Nagpur route to alleviate annual travel woes.
As the Diwali festival approaches, the Pune-Nagpur train route is experiencing unprecedented demand, with many travelers unable to secure confirmed tickets. The 700-kilometer journey has become a significant challenge for residents of Vidarbha, particularly those working or studying in Pune. Despite the operation of 70 trains, including 66 special services for the festive period, the availability of seats remains critically low, leading to widespread frustration among passengers.
The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that the peak travel days from November 1 to 10 are fully booked, with many trains displaying 'REGRET' signs for all classes of travel. A recent check revealed that all 15 trains monitored during this period were fully booked, with waiting lists reaching alarming figures. For instance, the Azad Hind Express and Maharashtra Express consistently showed waiting lists between 177 and 250, indicating a severe shortfall in capacity.
Central Railway officials have announced that they have added 30,000 extra berths to accommodate the surge in demand. However, these additional seats were quickly filled, leaving many passengers without options. Regular trains have also been reported to have waiting lists of 120-200 during the main travel dates of October 18-26, further complicating the situation for those hoping to return home for the festivities.
The impact of this travel crisis extends beyond individual inconvenience; it reflects a broader issue of inadequate rail services on this crucial route. Passengers have expressed their dissatisfaction, emphasizing the emotional significance of returning home for Diwali. Many have called for the introduction of more permanent train services rather than relying solely on temporary specials, which do not adequately meet the needs of travelers during peak seasons.
Looking ahead, the demand for additional train services is likely to continue, particularly as the festival approaches. Passengers are advocating for daily special trains and an increase in coach availability to ensure that they can travel comfortably and safely. The ongoing challenges highlight the need for a long-term solution to improve rail connectivity between Pune and Nagpur, particularly during high-demand periods like Diwali.
