The recent election for the graduates' constituency in Nagpur has sparked a betting frenzy, with estimates suggesting that around ₹100 crore was wagered on the outcome. The political landscape was not the only thing disrupted; the betting market also experienced significant fluctuations as results began to emerge.
Initially, Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari was favored in the betting market. However, as the election date approached, the odds shifted dramatically in favor of BJP's Sudhakar Kohale. On October 23, Kohale's odds were set at 60 paise, while Wanjari's were at 80 paise. By October 25, Kohale's odds dropped to 55 paise, indicating a growing belief among bettors that he had a better chance of winning.
Reports indicate that over 500 bookmakers were active in Nagpur, engaging in betting on various events, including elections and sports. As the vote counting progressed on October 28, some bookmakers ceased accepting bets, reflecting the uncertainty in the market. Meanwhile, betting on Wanjari began to resurface as the results shifted, leading to financial losses for those who had previously placed bets based on earlier predictions.
The betting market also saw an unexpected turn with Nitesh Karale, known as Karale Master. Initially overlooked, his odds rose significantly during the counting process, with some bookmakers reporting rates exceeding 70 paise at critical milestones. This shift allowed certain bettors to capitalize on the changing dynamics, contrasting sharply with the losses experienced by others.
The outcome of the graduates' constituency election has highlighted the discrepancies between pre-election predictions and actual results in the betting market. While discussions about the betting turnover and the financial implications for bookmakers have intensified, there remains no official confirmation regarding the total amount wagered or the actual profits and losses incurred.
