Pune-Nagpur Bus Fares Reach Rs 9,000 Ahead of Diwali
Traveling from Pune to Nagpur is becoming increasingly expensive as bus fares soar dramatically ahead of the Diwali festival.
One-way bus fares have surged to Rs 9,000, with expectations of reaching Rs 11,000 during peak days.
The increase represents a staggering 400% rise compared to standard fares of Rs 1,000-1,800.
MSRTC plans to operate additional buses at regular fares to accommodate the surge in demand.
As Diwali approaches, passengers traveling from Pune to Nagpur are facing steep increases in bus fares, which have now reached Rs 9,000 for one-way trips. This surge is expected to climb to Rs 11,000 as the festive season nears, marking a significant rise from the usual fares of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,800. The current prices reflect a staggering 400% increase compared to normal rates, leaving many travelers with limited options.
Last year, passengers experienced similar fare hikes, with tickets that typically sold for Rs 1,500 being priced at Rs 5,000, and on the final day, fares soared to Rs 11,000. Online ticketing platforms indicate a notable increase in the number of buses scheduled for the festive rush, with 177 buses available on November 4 and 220 on November 6, compared to the usual 100-160 buses operated by 40-69 companies.
Current fare structures show premium Volvo buses priced at Rs 8,999, while regular buses range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,750. The condition of roads has also affected travel times; last year, a journey that typically took nine hours extended to 15 hours due to poor road conditions. Improvements have been made this year, allowing travelers to cover distances more efficiently, although traffic congestion remains a concern.
Carpooling has emerged as a viable alternative for many, with rates on platforms like BlaBlaCar ranging from Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 for trips from Pune to Nagpur. Approximately 66% of rides are already booked, indicating a shift in travel preferences due to the exorbitant bus fares. Despite state regulations capping fares at 1.5 times the MSRTC rates, enforcement has been lacking, leading to complaints from passengers.
In response to the fare hikes, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced plans to operate additional buses at regular fares from October 29 to November 7. These buses will run frequently throughout the day, providing an affordable option for travelers during the busy Diwali season. MSRTC officials have stated that more buses will be introduced to meet the increased demand, ensuring that passengers have access to reasonable travel options during the festive period.
