On Thursday, opposition parties from the INDIA bloc organized protests in Nagpur, Amravati, and Chandrapur, targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrators accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of failing to maintain transparency in the electoral process, raising concerns about the integrity of upcoming elections.
In Nagpur, a coalition of Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), CPI, and CPM marched from the Mahatma Gandhi statue to the district collectorate. They presented a memorandum outlining their grievances regarding the ECI's operations and pressed for enhanced transparency in electoral procedures. Protesters vocally criticized Kumar and expressed their support for Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Chandrapur witnessed Congress MP Pratibha Dhanorkar leading a rally under the banner of 'Vote Bachao–Desh Bachao', part of the broader 'Loktantra Bachao Week'. Dhanorkar demanded the resignation of CEC Kumar, emphasizing the need to safeguard voters' rights and uphold constitutional values. The Congress delegation also submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, advocating for the independence of the Election Commission.
In Amravati, opposition leaders gathered to march towards the district collectorate, where they submitted a memorandum to collector Ashish Yerekar. Former minister Yashomati Thakur criticized the ruling BJP government and the Election Commission, alleging that the electoral process has been compromised. The protests were marked by a call for vigilance among citizens regarding their democratic rights.
Looking ahead, the opposition parties plan to continue their campaign for electoral transparency and accountability. They are expected to organize further demonstrations and rallies leading up to the elections, aiming to mobilize public support and raise awareness about the perceived shortcomings of the Election Commission.
