Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced a significant environmental initiative on Saturday, aiming to plant 2.5 million trees in Nagpur. This announcement was made during a press conference marking the 12th anniversary of the Central Government's initiatives in the city. The tree plantation will be part of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, where saplings between 2 to 3 meters tall will be distributed to educational institutions, NGOs, and political parties for widespread planting and conservation efforts.

Gadkari elaborated on the collaboration between the Revenue and Forest Departments and the Remote Sensing Centre in Nagpur, which will map all districts and talukas in Maharashtra. Districts that engage in extensive plantation activities will be recognized for their contributions, fostering a competitive spirit among local administrations to enhance green cover.

In addition to the environmental focus, Gadkari reviewed various welfare initiatives by the Central Government. He noted that over 58 crore bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, benefiting millions. The Ayushman Bharat scheme has reached 60 crore citizens, while 11 crore LPG connections have been provided under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme supports an equal number of farmers with annual assistance.

The minister also discussed ongoing development projects in Nagpur, including the modernization of key commercial hubs such as the Cotton Market and Itwari Market. Other notable projects include the Agro Convention Centre and the redevelopment of various bus stands. The Nagpur Metro's Phase II is currently under construction, with the Detailed Project Report for Phase III already completed, indicating a robust growth trajectory for urban infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Gadkari emphasized the importance of upcoming transport infrastructure projects, including the Nagpur-Hyderabad Expressway, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time. The Indora-Dighori flyover project is nearing completion and is set to open by August 1, 2026. These initiatives not only aim to enhance connectivity but also to create job opportunities and stimulate local economies.
