Nagpur's Swimming Pools at Risk Amid Water Scarcity

The city administration is considering regulations, but no shutdown orders have been issued yet.
Nagpur is currently experiencing a significant water crisis, prompting local authorities to examine the role of swimming pools in water consumption. With groundwater levels declining and restrictions on borewell usage in place, pool operators are worried about the possibility of shutdowns as the city pushes for water conservation measures.
Swimming pools in Nagpur can be categorized into two types: those that utilize water from their own wells or borewells, and those that rely on the municipal water supply. This classification is becoming increasingly important as the administration evaluates how to manage water resources effectively during this challenging period.
Prashant Ugemuge, the Managing Director of Midland Sports and Wellness, which operates a swimming pool in collaboration with the Nagpur Improvement Trust, emphasized that their facility sources water from Ambazari, a non-drinking water source. He clarified that the pool is not a significant contributor to the city's drinking water supply and highlighted that modern pools recycle water, minimizing wastage. Ugemuge pointed out that the water is reused over months, with losses mainly occurring from spills or usage in showers.
The broader implications of this crisis extend beyond swimming pools. Ugemuge suggested that household water usage habits should also be scrutinized, as daily practices like long showers and running taps contribute to significant water waste. He advocated for the adoption of treated sewage water for non-potable uses, such as gardening and vehicle washing, to alleviate pressure on drinking water supplies.
As the situation evolves, the city administration's decisions regarding swimming pool regulations remain uncertain. Pool operators are prepared to comply with any directives issued, while the community grapples with the pressing need for responsible water usage across all sectors. The focus should be on sustainable water management practices rather than solely imposing restrictions on specific facilities.
