Recent Ganeshotsav festivities saw violations of anti-pollution norms without any intervention.

A year after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) announced significant penalties to combat pollution in water bodies, the initiative has failed to yield any results. Official data from the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) indicates that since the penalties were introduced in November 2022, no offenders have been penalized. Virsen Tambe, the leader of the NDS, confirmed that their records show no actions taken against polluters in the past year.

This lack of enforcement raises critical questions about the effectiveness of the NMC's pollution control measures. While officials had previously claimed that these penalties were part of a comprehensive strategy to improve cleanliness and elevate Nagpur's standing in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Reports indicate that city nullahs and stormwater channels remain clogged with construction debris and waste, suggesting that illegal dumping continues unchecked.

The NMC's approach appears to be more about appearances than actual enforcement. Although the corporation expanded its nuisance categories to 52 in an effort to demonstrate a commitment to tackling pollution, the absence of any penal actions against violators highlights a significant gap in deterrence. Without active monitoring and enforcement, the ecological health of Nagpur's lakes and drainage systems remains at risk.

The situation was further exacerbated during the recent Ganeshotsav celebrations, where blatant violations of anti-pollution norms were evident. Despite clear prohibitions against immersing idols in natural water bodies, the Bhonsalewada Hadpakya Ganpati was immersed directly into Gandhisagar Lake. This incident, reported by 'The Hitavada,' occurred without any intervention from civic authorities, who failed to impose penalties or even acknowledge the violation when questioned.

Looking ahead, the NMC faces mounting pressure to translate its stringent regulations into actionable enforcement. Without a commitment to monitoring and penalizing polluters, Nagpur's water bodies will continue to suffer from neglect and pollution, undermining the city's environmental goals.
