The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has initiated significant road safety improvements on the main road in the MIDC Butibori area. This action follows a series of tragic incidents, including six fatalities on a 4.1-kilometer stretch between January and August 2026, prompting intervention from the Nagpur Rural Police.
The urgency for these measures escalated after the death of Sagar Padmakar Lokhande in a bus accident on September 23, 2026. Investigations by the Butibori Police Station revealed that essential safety protocols had not been implemented, leading to the identification of the project manager from G. R. Infraprojects Limited and the bus driver as responsible parties.
In response to the alarming frequency of accidents, the Nagpur Rural Police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Harssh A. Poddar, reached out to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to address the pressing safety concerns. Collaborating with road safety experts, the police conducted a thorough inspection of the road, identifying critical risks and recommending a series of safety enhancements.
The proposed improvements included the installation of proper barricades, enhanced traffic management systems, reflective markers for improved visibility at night, safety barriers, and clear warning and directional signage. The police also emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring of risks associated with construction activities in the area. Following persistent follow-ups by SP Dr. Poddar, Maha-Metro implemented the recommended safety measures, aiming to mitigate the risk of future accidents.
SP Dr. Poddar remarked that these initiatives are crucial for reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike on this heavily trafficked industrial road. The authorities are committed to maintaining a safer environment for all road users in the Butibori region.
