The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) has officially announced an extension of 10 months for the completion of the Wardha Road concretisation project in Nagpur, now scheduled to finish in July 2027. This project involves a 2.6-km stretch between Rahate Colony Square and RBI Square, a crucial route in the city. The initial deadline was set for September 2026, but ongoing construction challenges have necessitated this delay.
The project, which has a budget of INR 25 crore, is being executed in phases to minimize disruption on the busy NH-44 corridor. So far, the PWD has completed work on the section between Rahate Colony and Panchsheel Square, while the stretch from Panchsheel Square to Rani Jhansi Square remains closed to facilitate ongoing construction. The phased approach aims to keep traffic flowing as much as possible despite the construction activities.
PWD officials have cited several reasons for the delay, including the heavy traffic that characterizes this major roadway, difficulties in obtaining necessary permissions for traffic diversions, and interruptions caused by the movement of VIPs. The department has indicated that the construction is being carried out in smaller phases due to the road's status as part of the old NH-44 alignment, which is vital for daily commuters.
The ongoing construction has led to increased congestion along the corridor, with parts of the road being closed intermittently. While the project includes plans for cycle tracks, visible progress on this aspect has yet to be seen, as the focus remains on completing the main roadworks first. PWD has assured that cycle tracks will be developed after the primary work is concluded and will be implemented wherever feasible.
Looking ahead, the PWD's immediate goal is to complete the delayed works within the newly established timeline while effectively managing traffic around the construction zones. The extended deadline means that residents and commuters in Nagpur will continue to face construction-related disruptions for a longer duration than initially anticipated, highlighting the need for efficient traffic management in conjunction with ongoing infrastructure improvements.
