In a significant move to enhance public safety, Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil has announced a ban on the use of beam and laser lights throughout the Nagpur Police Commissionerate until December 31, 2026. This decision comes in light of the upcoming festive season, which includes major celebrations such as Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Gurunanak Jayanti, Christmas, Mahaparinirvan Day, and New Year’s Eve.
The order, enacted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, aims to address the frequent use of powerful lighting during local events. While these lights are popular for enhancing festivities, they pose serious risks, including potential eye injuries and distractions for drivers, which can lead to accidents and public disorder.
According to the official notification, all owners and operators of beam and laser lighting equipment are required to ensure that their devices remain switched off and secured during the ban period. Additionally, event organizers have been explicitly instructed to refrain from using such lighting during this timeframe, which begins at midnight on November 2, 2026, and extends until 11:59 pm on December 31, 2026.
This restriction is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with these types of lights during a time when public gatherings are common. The police department emphasizes that the safety of citizens is a priority, especially during festive occasions when large crowds gather.
Looking ahead, the Nagpur Police will monitor compliance with this order closely. Any violations could lead to penalties for the organizers and operators involved. The police encourage the community to celebrate responsibly and prioritize safety during the festive season.
