The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is actively considering initiatives aimed at enhancing the city's green cover. Among the proposals is a 'Dial for Tree' helpline, which would allow residents to request saplings for planting. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to engage citizens in tree plantation efforts and promote environmental responsibility within the community.

The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has provided several recommendations to the NMC, emphasizing the need for increased tree diversity. This includes prioritizing native species that are well-suited to the local climate and resilient to future environmental changes. NEERI also suggests focusing on areas where tree diversity is currently lacking, particularly in South Nagpur, to ensure that residents have access to green spaces within a 300-meter radius of their homes.

In addition to enhancing tree diversity, NEERI has called for a review of existing avenue plantations across various zones and wards. This review aims to identify regions that lack greenery and to allocate specific budgets for both planting and maintenance. The incorporation of the 3-30-300 principle into urban planning is also recommended, which advocates for visibility of three trees from every home, 30% tree canopy cover in neighborhoods, and access to green spaces within 300 meters.

The recommendations highlight the critical role of community participation in these initiatives. There is a push for promoting rooftop gardens and vertical greening in high-rise buildings, which can significantly contribute to urban greenery. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Rathod noted that recognizing green buildings could encourage sustainable construction practices, incentivizing developers to adopt eco-friendly measures.

Environmentalists, including Swachh Bharat ambassador Kaustav Chatterjee, have welcomed NMC's initiative to seek stakeholder input. However, they stress the importance of ongoing communication, accountability, and specific project focus in future meetings. The ultimate goal is to transform these ideas into actionable improvements that will benefit Nagpur's environment and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
