A 43-year-old man is accused of defrauding a family of Rs 10 lakh.
The accused created fake documents and made false promises of admission.
Police registered a case after the family reported the scam.
In a shocking incident in Nagpur, a family was allegedly duped of Rs 10 lakh under the pretense of securing medical college admission for their daughter. The complaint was filed against a 43-year-old man, Ashish Goswami, who is accused of misleading the victim's family with false assurances and fabricated documents.
The victim's father, Dinesh Thakre, sought help from Goswami after his 19-year-old daughter qualified for the NEET exam and was looking for a place in a reputable medical college. Goswami, who operated a tuition class, claimed he had connections with senior doctors at a government-run medical institute, which he used to gain the family's trust.
To further his deceit, Goswami allegedly orchestrated fake phone calls from individuals impersonating the doctors, convincing Thakre of his credibility. Between August 2025 and May 2026, Thakre made several payments totaling Rs 10 lakh, believing that his daughter’s admission was secured. However, when the promised admission failed to materialize, he reported the matter to the police.
The police initiated an inquiry and registered a case on September 26 at the Kalamna police station. As of now, Goswami has not been arrested. This incident is part of a troubling trend; earlier this year, another father was reportedly cheated out of Rs 14 lakh for a similar promise, and in May 2025, four individuals were charged for defrauding a parent of Rs 25 lakh under the guise of securing an MBBS seat.
The implications of such scams are significant, not only for the victims but also for the integrity of educational admissions in India. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging parents to exercise caution and verify claims made by individuals offering educational placements.
