Nagpur Faces Extended Water Supply Disruption Over 60 Hours
Water supply in Nagpur has been disrupted for over 60 hours due to incomplete work at the Pench-IV Water Treatment Plant.
Water supply disruption lasted over 60 hours.
Shutdown was initially scheduled for 36 hours.
20 command areas, including Nara and Dhantoli, were affected.
Residents of Nagpur experienced significant water supply disruptions lasting over 60 hours, as work at the Pench-IV Water Treatment Plant extended beyond its scheduled timeframe. The interruption began on October 6 at 10 AM and was initially expected to conclude by October 7 at 10 PM, but delays in completing essential interconnection works on the pipeline led to an extended outage that persisted until Thursday night.
The scheduled shutdown was intended for two major interconnection projects involving 1,400mm-diameter pipelines located near Mankapur Nallah, as well as the replacement of an inlet flow meter at Omkar Nagar New ESR. These operations are being managed by the World Bank Division of the state Public Works Department (PWD), which is tasked with ensuring the city's water infrastructure remains functional.
According to executive engineer Shrikant Waikar, the work involved relocating a pipeline to facilitate necessary interconnections for the Penchpur feeder. Although the project was anticipated to be completed on time, unforeseen complications led to the extension of the shutdown, causing widespread inconvenience to residents across multiple neighborhoods.
The disruption impacted approximately 20 command areas, including Nara, Nara NIT, Nari, Amrut Nari-1 and 2, Jaripatka, Dhantoli, Laxmi Nagar New, and several others. Rural areas such as Hudkeshwar-Narsala and the Godhani gram panchayat also faced challenges due to the prolonged lack of water supply. Many residents reported difficulties in accessing water for daily needs, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.
As of the latest updates, the work at the Pench-IV facility remained incomplete, leaving residents in several localities without a reliable water supply. Authorities are expected to provide further updates on the progress of the repairs and the anticipated timeline for restoring full water service to the affected areas.
