In a significant move, the Maharashtra government has allocated a plot of approximately 37,000 square feet in Babulkheda, Nagpur, for the construction of a memorial dedicated to Sant Ravidas Maharaj. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made this announcement during a ceremony honoring 495 students from the Charmkar community who achieved over 65% in their Class 10 and 12 examinations. The memorial will not only commemorate the saint but will also include an e-library and a community hall, enhancing educational resources for the local population.
The announcement comes as part of a broader initiative to celebrate the 650th birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas, which will kick off this year with statewide festivities. Fadnavis emphasized the importance of the saint's teachings, quoting, "Man changa toh kathauti mein Ganga," highlighting that purity of mind is more significant than physical rituals. He noted that 43 of Ravidas’ verses are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, underlining the saint's influence in spiritual literature.
During the event, Fadnavis also discussed the Swayam scheme, which provides financial assistance to students struggling to secure hostel accommodations. Under this program, students receive an annual grant of ₹60,000 for rent and food. Additionally, those gaining admission to top global universities are exempt from tuition fees, enabling many students to pursue international education who would otherwise face financial barriers.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who spoke prior to Fadnavis, stressed the necessity of integrating skills training with formal education. He remarked that education should extend beyond traditional academic paths, advocating for vocational training in areas like nursing and craftsmanship. Gadkari shared success stories from a footwear design institute he established, which has helped artisans create lucrative businesses through quality design education.
Reflecting on the educational progress within the Charmkar community, Fadnavis noted a remarkable increase in student performance over the past 18 years, with top scores rising from around 78-80% to nearly 97%. The achievements of students like Himanshu Gore and Samruddhi Vasankar, who topped their respective classes with scores of 97.4% and 94%, were celebrated as a testament to the community's advancement and commitment to education.
