Nagpur Airport to Undergo Major Terminal Renovation
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur is set to undergo significant renovations aimed at enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
The renovation project will cover approximately 19,500 square meters of terminal space.
New facilities will include self-bag-drop counters, self-check-in kiosks, and upgraded security measures.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with the first phase slated for completion within 12 to 18 months.
Nagpur's Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is poised for a substantial terminal renovation, following the completion of financial closure and contractor appointments by GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL). Chief Executive Officer Srikanth Bhandarkar announced that construction will commence once necessary regulatory approvals are secured. The first phase of the project is anticipated to be completed within 12 to 18 months from the start date, contingent on the execution schedule.
The renovation will enhance passenger convenience by introducing four self-bag-drop counters and five self-check-in kiosks. Additionally, the airport will bolster its security capabilities with four new X-ray machines and expand the forecourt area to improve traffic flow for drop-offs. Other upgrades include modernized washrooms, dedicated lounges for domestic and international travelers, and an increase in bus boarding gates from two to four, all aimed at streamlining passenger handling and boarding processes.
In preparation for the larger renovation, GNIAL has already implemented several service enhancements over the past three months. These improvements include the deployment of passenger support associates and queue managers at strategic locations, as well as enhancements to the Digi Yatra facial-recognition system. Other upgrades encompass improved lighting, landscaping, and terminal amenities such as fragrance systems and aerobridge carpets.
The implications of these renovations extend beyond mere aesthetics; they are designed to significantly improve the overall travel experience for passengers. With the introduction of additional trays and preparation tables at security checkpoints, the airport aims to minimize inconvenience. Furthermore, enhancements in trolley availability and baggage services, along with strengthened housekeeping and pest control measures, will contribute to a more pleasant environment for travelers.
