Massive Fire Destroys Goods Worth Rs4.81 Crore in Nagpur
A significant fire incident in Nagpur's Small Factory Area resulted in extensive damage to transport godowns, raising safety concerns.
A fire in Nagpur destroyed goods valued at Rs4.81 crore across seven godowns.
Encroachments and flammable materials hindered firefighting efforts, complicating the operation.
Local officials are calling for investigations into fire safety compliance in commercial establishments.
A devastating fire erupted on Sunday morning in the Small Factory Area of Nagpur, affecting a cluster of transport godowns on Old Bhandara Road. The blaze, which began around 7 AM at a godown housing plastic packaging materials, quickly spread to six neighboring godowns, leading to significant losses estimated at Rs4.81 crore. Three additional godowns sustained partial damage, while the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's fire department received an emergency call at 7:36 AM, and the first firefighting unit arrived within four minutes. However, the severity of the fire necessitated the deployment of approximately 10 firefighting vehicles, including five water bowsers capable of carrying 16,000 liters each and five tankers with a capacity of 10,000 liters. Teams from various fire stations, including Lakadganj and Kalamna, were engaged in the firefighting efforts.
The fire was fueled by large quantities of combustible materials such as plastic packaging, clothing, and electrical equipment, causing it to spread rapidly. The destruction included goods equivalent to over 15 truckloads, with the most significant loss, estimated at Rs2 crore, occurring at a godown that stored clothing, carpets, and electronics. Additionally, three pickup trucks and an autorickshaw were also destroyed in the blaze.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns regarding encroachments and inadequate fire safety measures in one of Nagpur's older industrial areas. Originally part of a steel industry, the premises had been subdivided into 10 godowns, with unauthorized extensions encroaching on open spaces and obstructing access for firefighting teams. Local officials noted that these encroachments severely limited the ability to combat the fire effectively.
In the aftermath of the fire, MLA Krishna Khopde and NMC ruling party leader Narendra Borkar visited the site, with Borkar calling for a thorough investigation and a report to be submitted within 10 days. The incident has raised critical questions about the enforcement of fire safety regulations and the necessity for regular inspections of commercial properties to prevent such disasters in the future.
