Collaboration aims to enhance local aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
Embraer and Mahindra Group have announced plans to set up a final assembly line for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This initiative is contingent upon the Indian Air Force's selection of the aircraft under its Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) procurement program, which would lead to an official order from the government.
The collaboration between the two companies is actively supported by the Maharashtra government, which has already allocated land in Nagpur for the proposed facility. This site will not only focus on the final assembly of the aircraft but will also include systems integration, manufacturing process development, and the establishment of a local supply chain. Vinod Sahay from Mahindra emphasized the importance of preparing the necessary industrial infrastructure to ensure swift implementation once the bid is approved.
The C-390 Millennium is designed for various military missions, including troop transport, cargo delivery, medical evacuations, and humanitarian efforts, with a payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes. The assembly line will leverage Embraer’s experience in aircraft development alongside Mahindra’s manufacturing capabilities, aiming to foster a robust aerospace industry in India. The project aligns with national initiatives like “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” which advocate for self-reliance in manufacturing.
Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, highlighted that selecting Nagpur is a significant milestone in building long-term industrial capabilities in the region. Mahindra is committed to developing the necessary technological and manufacturing expertise to support this program, although the final decision remains dependent on the Indian government's approval and the Air Force's order.
The partnership between Embraer and Mahindra began with a memorandum of understanding in February 2024, followed by a Strategic Cooperation Agreement in October 2025. This agreement encompasses local manufacturing, supply chain development, and maintenance activities. Additionally, in February 2026, the companies announced plans to establish maintenance capabilities for the C-390 in India, also contingent on the aircraft’s selection under the MTA program.
