Central Railway (CR) has successfully completed the Kavach 4.0 safety assessment across a significant stretch of 337 kilometers of railway tracks in the Pune, Solapur, and Nagpur divisions. This advanced safety system aims to bolster railway safety and operational reliability by preventing train collisions through automatic protection measures.

The Kavach 4.0 system, which adheres to Safety Integrity Level 4 standards, is designed to mitigate risks associated with signal passing at danger, control overspeeding, and implement automatic braking interventions. A senior official from CR highlighted that the latest assessment covered a 134-kilometer route between Ahilyanagar and the Yeola section in Pune Division, marking a substantial milestone in the ongoing safety evaluations.

In addition to the Pune Division, the assessment also encompassed a 104-kilometer stretch in the Amla-Chhindwara section of Nagpur Division and a 99-kilometer route on the Daund-Kurduwadi section in Solapur Division. The Ahilyanagar-Yeola section features 12 railway stations, equipped with infrastructure that enables effective communication between the trains and the safety system, while also monitoring speed, direction, and traffic on the routes.

The independent safety assessment was conducted by a team based in Italy, which performed rigorous testing and verification of essential safety features. These included overspeed protection mechanisms, monitoring of permanent speed restrictions, automatic signaling at level crossings, and measures to prevent signal passing at danger. The assessment also evaluated the generation of SOS alerts, operations by station masters, and various safety indicators, ensuring that the setup significantly enhances the safety of high-speed train operations.

Looking ahead, Central Railway aims to continue implementing the Kavach system across more routes, further improving safety standards and operational efficiency. The successful completion of this assessment is a crucial step towards achieving a safer railway network, with ongoing evaluations planned to cover additional stretches in the future.
