NIHR Funds 19 Innovative Health Projects to Enhance Community Care
Nineteen groundbreaking projects receive funding to integrate preventive health technologies into local community settings.
Funding ranges from £50,000 to £100,000 for each project.
Initiatives include early cancer detection, stroke rehabilitation, and mental health support.
The program aims to address health disparities in underserved communities.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has announced funding for 19 innovative research projects through its Invention for Innovation (i4i) Funding At the Speed of Translation (FAST) program. This initiative is designed to enhance community care by embedding preventive technologies directly into local settings such as pharmacies, schools, and mobile outreach units. The goal is to bring healthcare closer to where people live and work, ensuring that diverse communities receive essential support.
Each project is allocated between £50,000 and £100,000 for a duration of up to one year. This funding is aimed at transitioning standalone technologies into fully integrated local care solutions for patients. The projects encompass a wide range of health issues, including early cancer detection, stroke rehabilitation, dental health, mental health support, and digital palliative care. By focusing on these areas, the NIHR seeks to tackle health inequalities and improve access to care.
Among the funded projects is MpRisk, a new medical tool that assists midwives in identifying patients at higher risk during and after pregnancy, thereby improving access to maternity care for underserved populations. Another noteworthy initiative is CanSense-CRC, a blood test designed to detect bowel cancer earlier, offering an alternative for patients who may not be able to undergo traditional faecal tests. Additionally, the Intelligent Clinical Assessment Platform (iCAP) is a digital tool that aids advanced clinical practitioners in managing complex gynecological conditions, particularly in deprived communities.
Jo Smart, the program director of NIHR Invention for Innovation, emphasized the importance of the i4i FAST scheme in integrating innovative health technologies into community settings. She stated that the partnership with the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre Network is crucial in supporting projects that aim to reduce health disparities and enhance patient care.
The full list of funded projects includes initiatives focused on various health challenges, such as early identification of neutropenic sepsis in cancer patients, digital pathways for cardiovascular disease prevention, and school-based oral health interventions. The NIHR's commitment to these projects reflects a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes across the UK, particularly in areas that have historically faced barriers to accessing quality care.
