On November 3, 2026, Merck Animal Health announced the launch of its NOBIVAC NXT Rabies vaccines for dogs and cats in the United States. These next-generation vaccines, NOBIVAC NXT® 1-Rabies and NOBIVAC NXT® 3-Rabies, are designed for healthy pets aged 12 weeks and older, providing essential protection against rabies. The introduction of these vaccines is a significant step in expanding access to advanced veterinary care for companion animals.
Rabies is a critical public health concern, known for its fatality once clinical symptoms manifest. Despite being preventable through vaccination, the disease continues to pose risks to both animals and humans. The NOBIVAC NXT platform reflects Merck's commitment to innovative veterinary solutions, with the new vaccines offering a convenient three-year immunity after a repeat dose, thus enhancing compliance among pet owners.
According to Meg Conlon, DVM, executive director of U.S. companion animal veterinary services at Merck Animal Health, the NOBIVAC NXT vaccines combine cutting-edge technology with a focus on preventive care. These vaccines are non-adjuvanted, preservative-free, and designed to ensure a comfortable vaccination experience for pets. The low-volume 0.5 mL dose aims to ease administration for veterinary teams while maintaining the trusted protection associated with the NOBIVAC brand.
The impact of these vaccines extends beyond individual pets; they play a crucial role in public health by helping to control rabies transmission. Routine vaccination is essential for safeguarding both animal and human health, and Merck's ongoing efforts in rabies prevention underscore the importance of veterinary education and community partnerships in combating this deadly disease.
Looking ahead, Merck Animal Health is poised to continue its commitment to rabies prevention through scientific advancements and educational initiatives. The introduction of NOBIVAC NXT Rabies vaccines marks a pivotal moment in veterinary medicine, promising to enhance the health and well-being of pets across the United States while supporting public health efforts against rabies.
