The CHAIN initiative is a 36-month project funded by the EU4Health Programme.

2

It aims to create a federated ecosystem for AI adoption in cardiovascular health management.

3

The initiative will involve 53 partners from 20 European countries, including hospitals and universities.

The European Union has launched a significant initiative known as the European Cardiovascular Health Data and AI Network (CHAIN) to enhance the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and health data in cardiovascular care. Funded by the EU4Health Programme, this 36-month project aims to address the pressing need for improved cardiovascular disease (CVD) management, which remains the leading cause of mortality in Europe.

Cardiovascular diseases pose a substantial health burden across Europe, accounting for one in three deaths and costing the EU approximately €282 billion annually. The CHAIN initiative seeks to leverage health data and AI to improve prevention, early detection, and treatment of CVDs. Despite the potential benefits, the current uptake of AI in healthcare is inconsistent, and standardized validation mechanisms are lacking, which CHAIN aims to rectify.

Coordinated by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), CHAIN brings together a consortium of 53 partners, including universities, research centers, hospitals, technology firms, and health ministries from 20 European nations. This collaborative effort builds on the existing EuroHeart registry network, which standardizes data on cardiovascular care and outcomes across 18 ESC member countries. By creating a unified platform, CHAIN intends to facilitate the monitoring of health outcomes and the sharing of best practices among countries.

The initiative is aligned with the EU Safe Hearts Plan, which emphasizes the integration of AI and digital technologies in healthcare. By establishing a federated ecosystem, CHAIN will securely connect hospitals and health data hubs across Europe, enabling the testing and validation of AI solutions. This will empower healthcare professionals to identify diseases earlier and provide more consistent patient care, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes.

Looking ahead, CHAIN plans to implement six real-world use cases across 13 countries, focusing on prevention, early detection, and clinical decision support for complex cardiovascular conditions. The initiative aims to create a strategic roadmap for scaling AI adoption in cardiology, benefiting both research and healthcare systems. As the project progresses, validated AI tools will be made available through a European repository, enhancing trust in AI applications in healthcare.
