During the 28th Joint Annual National Conference of the National College of Chest Physicians, India (NCCP-I) and the Indian Chest Society (ICS) in Jaipur, experts discussed the significant role artificial intelligence (AI) could play in the early detection of tuberculosis (TB) and lung cancer. Held from October 22 to 25, the event attracted over 2,000 pulmonologists, respiratory physicians, and healthcare professionals from across India and beyond.

Dr. Randeep Guleria, former Director of AIIMS, emphasized that AI has the potential to revolutionize the identification and management of respiratory diseases. He pointed out that AI-powered tools can detect abnormalities in chest X-rays and CT scans, which can lead to quicker and more informed clinical decisions regarding patient treatment and further investigations.

The conference highlighted that AI-driven software is capable of analyzing chest X-rays to identify patterns linked to tuberculosis, allowing healthcare workers to prioritize patients who need further testing. This technology could be especially advantageous in rural and underserved regions, where access to specialized radiologists is limited, thus improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Raj Kumar, Director of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute in Delhi, noted that AI-assisted screening of chest X-rays could significantly enhance the reach and effectiveness of TB detection initiatives. Additionally, discussions at the conference underscored the increasing importance of AI in diagnosing lung cancer, with advanced algorithms aiding clinicians in reviewing CT scans to identify suspicious lung nodules that may necessitate further evaluation.

Looking ahead, the integration of AI in healthcare practices is expected to grow, with ongoing research and development aimed at refining these technologies. The potential for AI to assist in early detection and diagnosis of respiratory diseases presents a promising avenue for improving healthcare delivery in India, particularly in combating the high burden of TB and lung cancer.
