Scott Kirby, the CEO of United Airlines, recently opened up about his daily routine, highlighting how he manages his responsibilities while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In an interview with Business Insider, Kirby described his typical day, which starts early with 8.5 hours of sleep and includes a mix of exercise, reading, and family interactions.
Waking up between 5 and 5:30 AM, Kirby does not rely on an alarm clock, stating he has rarely needed one. His morning begins with a light snack, typically an apple or banana, before engaging in a workout that includes weight training and running. He often reads news articles during his exercise sessions, showcasing his commitment to staying informed while staying fit.
Kirby emphasizes the importance of family in his life. By 7 AM, he has breakfast with his children and takes them to school, cherishing their morning routine. He also schedules business breakfasts once or twice a week, balancing professional and personal commitments effectively. His workday usually starts at 8 AM, where he adheres to a strict guideline of limiting meetings to four hours, preferring discussions over presentations to foster a more engaging work environment.
In terms of nutrition, Kirby views lunch merely as fuel, often consuming it in just five minutes. He dedicates around three hours daily to reading, a habit he finds essential for understanding global events. His reading routine includes walking, and he averages over 20,000 steps daily, indicating a strong commitment to physical health alongside intellectual growth.
Despite his demanding role, Kirby makes it a priority to spend quality time with his family, often finishing work by 5 PM to engage in their activities. He aims to go to bed by 9 PM to maintain his sleep schedule. With frequent travel, including at least three flights a week, Kirby adapts his routine but remains focused on his health and family, asserting that he is likely the 'least stressed person' in his position.
