Two-Wheeler Sales Surge to 17,90,188 Units in September 2026
September 2026 witnessed a remarkable 33.08% increase in two-wheeler retail sales, driven by strong rural demand.
Total two-wheeler registrations reached 17,90,188 units in September 2026.
Honda maintained its market leadership with 4,69,789 units sold.
Electric two-wheeler sales saw significant growth, particularly for Ather Energy.
In September 2026, two-wheeler retail sales experienced a significant boost, achieving a total of 17,90,188 registrations. This figure marks a 33.08% increase compared to the 13,45,153 units sold in the same month last year. Additionally, sales rose by 4.41% from the previous month, August 2026, which recorded 17,14,610 units. This month stands out as the best September performance for the two-wheeler segment to date.
The growth in sales can be attributed to heightened demand, particularly from rural areas, as consumers prepare for the upcoming festive season. Urban retail sales improved by 5.29%, while rural sales saw a 3.62% increase. Petrol-powered two-wheelers continued to dominate the market, holding an 88.35% share, while electric models accounted for 11.58% and CNG/LPG variants made up 0.07%.
Honda retained its top position in the market, selling 4,69,789 units and increasing its market share to 26.19%, up from 25.24% in September 2025. Hero MotoCorp followed with 4,34,442 units sold, though its market share dipped to 24.26% from 24.57% year-on-year. TVS Motor also reported strong growth, with sales rising to 3,64,640 units from 2,56,042 units in the same month last year, boosting its market share to 20.37%.
Bajaj Auto's sales increased to 1,66,112 units, although its market share fell to 9.28% from 10.72%. Royal Enfield's sales rose to 1,02,226 units, but its market share decreased to 5.71%. Suzuki and Yamaha also reported improved sales figures, with Suzuki selling 1,01,926 units and Yamaha reaching 64,292 units.
The electric two-wheeler segment saw a resurgence in demand, with Ather Energy's sales climbing to 30,533 units, capturing a 1.71% market share. However, Ola Electric experienced a decline in sales, dropping to 13,451 units. Other electric manufacturers, such as Greaves Ampere and River Mobility, also reported substantial increases in sales, contributing to the overall growth of the two-wheeler market in September 2026.
