Texas data center projects face uncertainty due to new political leadership and potential regulatory changes.
Following the recent midterm elections, investments tied to Donald Trump and AI data centers are experiencing notable declines. The Democratic Party's success has unsettled the digital asset market, particularly affecting cryptocurrencies associated with Trump and the data center projects in Texas that support valuations of former Bitcoin mining companies.
World Liberty Financial's WLFI tokens, co-founded by Trump, dropped approximately 6% within 24 hours, while his memecoin saw a staggering decline of nearly 19%. Additionally, shares of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. fell by 25%, and the DJTU ETF, which offers leveraged exposure to the company, plummeted by almost 50%. Analysts suggest that these declines reflect both a decrease in popularity and the impending investigations related to Trump.
Investors are also reevaluating plans to convert mining facilities into AI campuses. The election of a governor in Texas who opposed unrestricted data center development raises concerns about future computing capacity. With the Democratic sweep, the pace of data center construction is expected to slow, compounding the financial pressures on builders. Companies like Galaxy Digital Inc. and Hut 8 Corp. have seen their shares drop by 17% and 23%, respectively, while other firms in the sector have also reported losses.
The implications of these political changes are significant, especially for companies with substantial operations in Texas, which accounts for nearly 30% of the U.S. data center capacity expected to come online by 2028. Experts predict that new regulations could favor established companies with strong compliance records. The newly elected governor, Gina Hinojosa, is anticipated to adopt a stricter stance on data center operations, potentially introducing a moratorium on new developments.
Despite the downturn, some analysts argue that the market reaction may be exaggerated. They note that the Trump administration's pro-AI stance could position Bitcoin mining firms favorably, as they already possess the necessary infrastructure. If stricter regulations are implemented, the existing facilities may become more valuable, suggesting that the current sell-off could be premature.
