This surge also represented a 6.17% increase from the previous month, August 2026, where sales totaled 4,02,398 units. The data, released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), indicates a strong recovery in the automotive sector as consumer demand continues to rise.

Historically, the automotive market has seen fluctuations, but the recent trend indicates a positive trajectory. Year-to-date figures show that passenger vehicle sales have reached 25,44,187 units, a 24.48% increase over the same period last year. Both urban and rural areas contributed to this growth, with urban sales rising by 32.11% and rural sales by 32.09% year-on-year.

Maruti Suzuki retained its position as the market leader, selling 1,69,132 units in September 2026, which translates to a market share of 39.59%. Mahindra followed closely behind, selling 57,343 units, just 89 units ahead of Tata Motors, which recorded 57,254 units. This slight edge allowed Mahindra to maintain its second position, while Tata's market share dipped to 13.40% from 13.76% the previous year. Hyundai and Toyota also reported significant sales, with 50,201 and 28,050 units sold, respectively.

The fuel type distribution reveals that petrol and ethanol vehicles dominated the market with a 41.27% share, while diesel vehicles held 17.74% and CNG/LPG vehicles accounted for 23.11%. Notably, electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids represented 8.45% and 9.44% of sales, respectively, indicating a growing shift towards more sustainable options among consumers.

Looking ahead, the automotive industry is expected to continue its upward trend as manufacturers adapt to changing consumer preferences and invest in electric vehicle technology. Upcoming months will be crucial for assessing whether this growth can be sustained, particularly as new models are launched and competition intensifies in the market.
