Nifty 50 drops 1.64%, closing at 22,232
Key support levels identified at 22,000 and 21,700
India VIX rises to 15.275, indicating increased market anxiety
On October 8, the Nifty 50 index experienced a significant decline of 1.64%, closing at 22,232. This marks the index's lowest closing level in 18 months, reflecting ongoing bearish sentiment in the market. The decline was attributed to several factors, including rising oil prices, a weakening rupee, and persistent outflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, also surged above the 15 mark, further dampening investor confidence.
The market's bearish trend is underscored by technical indicators. The Nifty 50 has traded below all key moving averages, with momentum indicators remaining firmly in bearish territory. Analysts suggest that if the index breaks below the recent low of 22,180, it could target the psychological level of 22,000, followed by 21,700, which represents the low from April 2025. Resistance levels are identified at 22,400 and 22,600-22,700.
In terms of options data, the maximum call open interest was observed at the 22,700 strike, indicating a potential resistance level for the Nifty in the near term. Conversely, the maximum put open interest was at the 22,000 strike, suggesting it may serve as a critical support level. The put-call ratio (PCR) fell to 0.73, indicating a bearish sentiment as more traders are selling call options than puts.
The Bank Nifty also faced challenges, closing at 54,515 after a 1% decline. Similar to the Nifty 50, the Bank Nifty formed a long bearish candle on the daily charts, remaining below key moving averages. Resistance levels are noted at 54,899 and 55,055, while support is seen at 54,395 and 54,239. The overall sentiment in the banking sector remains weak, although some indicators suggest a gradual easing of bearish momentum.
Looking ahead, traders are advised to monitor key support and resistance levels closely. The upcoming trading sessions will be crucial in determining whether the Nifty 50 can regain momentum or if it will continue its downward trajectory. Investors are encouraged to stay informed about market developments and adjust their strategies accordingly.
