Starlink's launch remains pending despite securing key regulatory approvals.
Elon Musk has intensified his criticisms of Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, as delays continue to plague the launch of Starlink in India. In a recent post on social media platform X, Musk mockingly referred to Ambani as the country’s 'prime minister,' implying that he has significant influence over government decisions affecting the satellite internet service. Musk's remarks come as he argues that Starlink could provide internet access to underserved areas, thereby enhancing educational opportunities for children and enabling small businesses to reach a global customer base.
The backdrop to Musk's comments includes a long-standing effort by SpaceX to introduce Starlink in India. Despite entering into distribution agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel last year, the service has yet to receive the necessary approvals from the Indian government to commence commercial operations. Musk's recent statements follow earlier accusations that unnamed 'oligarchs' are obstructing the launch to protect their business interests. The Indian Ministry of Communications has dismissed these claims, asserting that the regulatory environment for satellite communications is equitable and non-discriminatory.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Ministry clarified that Starlink, along with two other licensed satellite operators, is undergoing security assessments that must be completed before they can be allocated satellite spectrum. The ministry emphasized that all three operators are at a similar regulatory stage, countering Musk's assertion that Starlink is being unfairly targeted. Meanwhile, both Jio and Airtel are also preparing to launch their satellite internet services in India, with Jio collaborating with Luxembourg-based SES and Airtel being a significant stakeholder in Eutelsat OneWeb.
India, with its vast population and over a billion internet users, represents a crucial market for Musk. However, navigating this landscape involves engaging with influential business figures like Ambani, whose conglomerate dominates the telecom sector and collaborates with the Indian government on major initiatives. Alongside the challenges facing Starlink, Musk has also encountered obstacles in expanding Tesla's footprint in India, where the company launched last year but faced slow sales due to high import duties and pricing issues.
As the situation develops, Musk's ongoing criticisms of Ambani and the regulatory hurdles for Starlink signal a complex interplay of business interests and government regulations in India. The telecom minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has recently reiterated that the country does not permit monopolistic practices in any sector, further complicating Musk's claims. The future of Starlink in India remains uncertain as the company awaits the necessary approvals to proceed with its launch.
