On October 12, the Nifty 50 index experienced a decline of 0.7%, indicating a continuation of bearish sentiment in the market. This drop followed a week that began with some gains, but the index has since traded below all significant moving averages on both daily and weekly charts, suggesting that sellers are firmly in control.
The market's current state can be attributed to several factors, including elevated crude oil prices, which remain above $100 per barrel. Analysts suggest that the immediate support level for the Nifty 50 is at 22,300, with a more critical support at 22,180 should selling pressure increase. Conversely, resistance is anticipated in the range of 22,500 to 22,600, with a further hurdle at 22,800.
Technical indicators reveal a weak market structure. The Nifty 50 has formed a long red candle on the daily chart, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 34.04, indicating a lack of upward momentum. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) has been trading below its signal line for nearly two months, although recent histogram readings suggest a slight easing of bearish momentum. In contrast, the Bank Nifty index also displayed weakness, trading below its key moving averages, with an RSI of 42.33.
Market sentiment is further illustrated by the Put-Call ratio (PCR), which fell to 0.73 from 1.14 in the previous session. A PCR below 0.7 indicates a bearish mood, as traders are more actively selling Call options compared to Put options. Additionally, the India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, increased by 6.1% to 15.25, signaling heightened caution among investors.
Looking ahead, traders will be closely monitoring the Nifty and Bank Nifty indices for potential shifts in momentum. The upcoming trading sessions will be crucial in determining whether the market can find support at the identified levels or if further declines are imminent. Investors are advised to remain vigilant and consider expert insights before making any investment decisions.
