During the NDTV World Summit in Delhi, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India will have its own smartphones by the year 2028. He emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "This is 23 October 2026. Please note it: 23 October 2028. You will have Indian-designed, Indian-manufactured, Indian-branded mobile phones." Vaishnaw elaborated on the complexities involved in smartphone design and assembly, highlighting the intricate components that must fit into a compact device.
Vaishnaw pointed out that the challenge of developing these smartphones was presented to designers three years ago. He revealed that an Indian company has already succeeded in designing, manufacturing, and delivering a 5G mobile phone to one of the largest telecom service providers in the United States. He mentioned, "You design the PCB, which is the motherboard of a mobile phone? Why can't you design that?" This achievement marks a significant step in India's technological capabilities.
The minister further stated that the Indian-made smartphone is expected to become one of the best-selling devices in the market. He expressed confidence that the capabilities developed over the past few years would lead to a product that retains Indian design and intellectual property. Vaishnaw remarked, "Now, we will use that capability to have the Indian brand, Indian design, and Indian IP retained in India."
In his address, Vaishnaw also took the opportunity to criticize the previous Congress government, claiming that their policies severely restricted the manufacturing sector. He stated, "The entire manufacturing sector was totally stymied by the kind of rules, regulations, and laws the Congress governments of those periods created." He contrasted this with the current government's focus on the 'Make in India' initiative, which he believes has fostered a more conducive environment for manufacturing growth.
Looking ahead, the minister's announcement sets a clear timeline for the development of indigenous smartphones, with 2028 as the target year. As India continues to enhance its technological infrastructure and capabilities, the focus will remain on fostering local innovation and manufacturing, potentially reshaping the smartphone market in the coming years.
