In September, India's retail inflation rate climbed to 5.54%, marking an increase from 4.82% in August. This rise, which exceeded economists' expectations of 5.40%, adds pressure on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to consider further monetary policy adjustments. The inflation rate has now been on an upward trajectory for 11 consecutive months, reaching its highest level in 22 months.

The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation reported that food inflation surged to 7.74% in September, up from 5.97% in August. Notably, rural areas experienced a faster increase in prices compared to urban centers. Additionally, transport services for goods saw a significant inflation increase of 14.73%, while personal transport costs rose by 7.46%.

Earlier this month, the RBI raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, aligning with global trends among major central banks aiming to combat rising inflation. The RBI indicated that further rate cuts are unlikely in the near future, suggesting that any forthcoming policy actions may involve either an increase or a pause in rates.

India's economy is particularly vulnerable to supply chain disruptions, especially due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, from which it imports approximately 85% of its fuel. The geopolitical tensions have contributed to elevated oil prices, and experts warn that volatility is expected to persist due to the Middle East conflict and other global factors.

Looking ahead, the RBI projects core inflation to be around 4.4% for the financial year ending March 2027, with headline inflation estimated at 5.2%, which exceeds its medium-term target of 4%. Additionally, the RBI has raised its economic growth forecast to 7.1%, but cautioned that ongoing geopolitical tensions and high commodity prices could hinder economic activity. The rural economy faces further risks due to adverse weather conditions, with the India Meteorological Department reporting the fourth lowest rainfall since 2001, impacting agricultural productivity significantly. Analysts predict another rate hike may occur in December as inflationary pressures continue to mount.
