Hyundai Motor Group has announced a substantial investment of $15.5 billion aimed at enhancing its operations in India over the next seven years. This commitment, which will be executed between 2026 and 2032, focuses on expanding manufacturing capabilities, developing research and development infrastructure, and fostering local supplier networks to support parts localization and technological innovation.
The announcement follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung, where the strategic importance of this investment was underscored. Hyundai plans to set up a dedicated investment entity in India to streamline and manage its investments across various sectors, including R&D and future technologies, thereby creating a robust automotive ecosystem.
As part of its investment strategy, Hyundai intends to enhance its manufacturing capacity at its existing facilities in Chennai, Pune, and Anantapur, which currently have a combined annual production capacity exceeding 1.4 million vehicles. Additionally, the company will invest $700 million to establish a comprehensive R&D system in India, aimed at bolstering its technological edge and facilitating the development of next-generation automotive technologies.
Hyundai's initiative is expected to significantly impact the local economy by creating job opportunities and strengthening the supply chain. The automaker plans to collaborate with local suppliers to enhance parts localization and build a resilient supply chain ecosystem. This move is part of Hyundai's broader strategy to position India as a core market for future growth and innovation in the automotive sector.
Looking ahead, Hyundai aims to explore new business avenues, including specialized automotive financing, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Euisun Chung emphasized that this investment reaffirms Hyundai's long-term commitment to India, highlighting the country's importance in the company's global strategy for the next three decades and beyond.
