On November 2, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the ongoing internal conflict within the Tata Group, urging the involved parties to amicably resolve their differences. Speaking at the Financial Express Leadership Awards in Mumbai, she highlighted the sensitivity of the matter, which involves significant commercial interests and business considerations, and called for discussions to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
The Tata Group, one of India's largest conglomerates, is currently embroiled in a disagreement regarding the reappointment of chairman N Chandrasekaran and the potential listing of Tata Sons on the stock market. This dispute has intensified following a board meeting on September 17, where a fresh five-year term for Chandrasekaran was approved, alongside steps toward a public listing. However, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata has opposed these proposals, revealing a rift between the holding company and its controlling shareholder.
Central to the listing debate is the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) regulatory framework, which mandates that upper-layer non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) must list within three years of their classification. Tata Sons, classified as such in September 2022, has sought to surrender its registration after settling its debts, but the RBI's rejection of this application has brought the listing issue back to the forefront. Tata Trusts, which holds approximately 66% of Tata Sons, has expressed concerns regarding public listing and the group's ownership structure, complicating the governance landscape further.
Sitharaman stressed that the resolution of these issues should occur internally rather than in the public eye. She remarked, "You cannot be spinning out like this in public," emphasizing the need for mature leadership to address the situation swiftly. She also acknowledged the Tata Group's significant contributions to the Indian economy, underscoring the importance of a harmonious resolution among the stakeholders involved.
The dispute has also attracted political attention, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticizing the government for its perceived mishandling of the situation within the Tata Group. In response, Sitharaman accused the opposition of politicizing the matter and questioned their approach to addressing issues through judicial means and public protests. She reiterated her position that the leadership should focus on resolving their differences without prolonging public discourse on the matter.
