Air India and Air India Express increase fuel surcharges for flights due to rising ATF prices.
Akasa Air reinstates fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights, effective October 9.
Surcharges vary by route, with domestic fees ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 1,200.
In a significant move, Air India and Air India Express have announced an increase in fuel surcharges for both international and domestic flights, effective from October 9, 2023. This decision comes amid rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which have been influenced by geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global energy markets.
The airlines stated that the recent volatility in ATF prices has led to heightened operational costs, making it necessary to adjust surcharges. For Air India Express, the new surcharge will apply to bookings made from midnight IST on October 9, while Air India will implement the changes starting at 11:00 AM IST on the same day. The surcharges will differ based on the flight sector and route category.
For domestic one-way flights, passengers will see surcharges ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 1,200. International flights will incur charges between $55 for routes to West Asia/Middle East and $215 for destinations in North America. This adjustment reflects the airlines' efforts to manage increasing operational expenses while maintaining service levels.
In addition to Air India, Akasa Air has also decided to reintroduce fuel surcharges on its domestic flights, effective from October 9. The domestic surcharge will vary from Rs 375 to Rs 1,150 based on the distance traveled, while international flights will attract a surcharge of Rs 2,500. Akasa had initially introduced this levy in March but suspended it for domestic services later. The reinstatement comes as the airline responds to ongoing high ATF prices and follows similar announcements from competitors like IndiGo.
As the aviation industry grapples with rising fuel costs, these adjustments may impact ticket prices and travel plans for passengers. Airlines are closely monitoring fuel price trends and geopolitical developments, which could lead to further changes in surcharge policies in the near future. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest fare updates as they plan their journeys.
