In a heart-wrenching response to the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal on August 26, families are resorting to symbolic cremations for their missing loved ones. As of now, more than 1,200 individuals have lost their lives, and nearly 5,000 remain unaccounted for. In Kathmandu, Sujan Achhami, 23, recently performed a ritual for his father, Dinesh, using an effigy instead of a body, highlighting the desperation of families facing the grim reality of their loved ones' disappearance.

The floods, which swept through northern and central regions of Nepal, have left many families grappling with the loss of their relatives. With hopes of finding survivors dwindling, relatives are compelled to say their final goodbyes without the physical presence of their loved ones. Khim Bahadur Gharti Magar, who lost his uncle and aunt during a pilgrimage, shared his sorrow, stating, "We searched for them everywhere," as he participated in a symbolic cremation on the banks of the Bagmati River.

Authorities are struggling to manage the aftermath of the disaster. Nepal Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle indicated that the identification of bodies has proven to be a significant challenge, with many remains in advanced stages of decomposition. Out of 1,344 bodies recovered, only 96 have been identified and returned to families, while the majority have been temporarily buried across various regions, including Kathmandu and Pokhara. The police have collected DNA samples from all recovered bodies to facilitate future identification.

The decision to conduct mass temporary burials has sparked outrage among the public, as many believe it contradicts Hindu religious practices. A priest at the Pashupatinath Temple noted that the recent days have been among the busiest since the 2015 earthquake, emphasizing the tragedy of families having to perform symbolic rituals instead of traditional cremations. He acknowledged the legitimacy of these rites according to Hindu scriptures but lamented the circumstances forcing families into such actions.

As Nepal continues to confront this humanitarian crisis, the focus remains on identifying the missing and providing closure to grieving families. The government is under pressure to improve its response and ensure that the dignity of the deceased is upheld. Meanwhile, families are left in anguish, hoping for news of their loved ones as they navigate this unprecedented tragedy.
