Lake Burst Risk Near China-Nepal Border Eases
Authorities report a decrease in the risk of a lake burst following a glacier collapse near the China-Nepal border, aiding rescue efforts.
Lake size reduced by 21,000 sq. meters
Rescue operations can continue safely
Authorities monitoring another larger water body
Chinese authorities announced on Saturday that the risk of a lake bursting near the China-Nepal border has diminished. This lake formed after a glacier collapse earlier this week, which caused devastating floods in the region. Satellite images indicate that the lake's water level is gradually decreasing, with parts of the lake bed now visible.
Experts from the Water Resources Ministry have stated that as long as the outflow remains manageable, search and rescue operations downstream can proceed safely. The initial overflow temporarily halted rescue efforts, but subsequent assessments deemed the situation under control. Authorities are also keeping an eye on a larger body of water at the glacier's foot, which poses additional risks until both lakes are fully drained.
