Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong criticism regarding the lack of early warnings from international allies before a significant missile assault by Russia on Monday. This attack, which involved ballistic missiles and drones, struck 11 regions in Ukraine, damaging over 10 energy facilities and leaving approximately 550,000 households without power. The strikes resulted in one fatality and eight injuries in Kyiv, underscoring the ongoing threat to civilian infrastructure amid Russia's intensified military actions.
The missile onslaught, which included 16 ballistic missiles and over 200 drones, was described by Zelenskyy as a deliberate attack on Kyiv and its surroundings. In a post on social media platform X, he lamented the absence of advance alerts from partner nations. The attacks were not confined to the capital; regions such as Kharkiv, Dnipro, Volyn, Rivne, and Odesa also reported strikes. Zelenskyy detailed that energy facilities in various regions, including Vinnytsia and Mykolaiv, were targeted, leading to widespread power outages.
In response to Zelenskyy's comments, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any claims of a pause in intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Speaking to NBC in Uzbekistan, Rubio stated, "There's been no pause," and questioned the basis of Zelenskyy's assertions. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russian forces launched a large-scale assault involving ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as 269 drones, with Ukrainian defenses successfully intercepting a significant number of these threats.
The ramifications of the attack were felt across multiple sectors, with damage reported to a private medical facility and a metro station in Kyiv. Additionally, educational institutions and sports facilities in the Dniprovskyi district were affected. In light of the strikes, Ukraine's deputy energy minister announced that rolling blackouts and electricity restrictions for industries would be implemented as a precautionary measure.
Zelenskyy further criticized the insufficient support from Ukraine's allies, particularly regarding air defense systems and sanctions against Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine has consistently sought to end the conflict and welcomed all diplomatic efforts for peace. However, he accused Russia of showing no willingness to de-escalate, urging partners to recognize the aggressor's role and to provide necessary support for Ukraine's defense efforts.
