A report has surfaced indicating that the directive to restrict the satellite system utilized by Ukraine for military communications originated from the White House. This information was disclosed by two U.S. officials and a Western official familiar with the situation. They revealed that the Pentagon received instructions to slow down the SpaceX Starshield service, which is a military-grade version of the Starlink technology used by the Ukrainian military.
The officials, who requested anonymity, did not identify the specific individuals within the White House responsible for this decision or its implementation. Notably, the Pentagon is the primary customer of Starshield, which has become crucial for Ukraine's battlefield operations.
Ukrainian officials reported that military-grade Starlink receivers have been malfunctioning when mounted on fast-moving vehicles, which has adversely affected the performance of drones that depend on these systems for navigation and guidance in combat scenarios. This disruption has raised concerns about Ukraine's operational capabilities against Russian forces.
In response to the situation, a senior U.S. official clarified that former President Trump did not impose any restrictions on Ukraine's access to SpaceX's satellite technology. While this statement does not rule out the possibility that other U.S. officials or agencies may have influenced the decision to limit access, it counters claims made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Trump was involved in the restrictions.
During a press conference in Brussels, President Zelensky acknowledged that while efforts are underway to restore Starlink services in Ukraine, the speed has not yet returned to pre-restriction levels. He stated, "Has the speed been fully restored to what it was before? No. Is the speed being restored now? Yes," highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the Ukrainian military in maintaining effective communication and operational efficiency.
