Arunachal Pradesh's government imposed restrictions on public gatherings following the unrest.

Protests in Arunachal Pradesh against the proposed 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project escalated into violence on Friday night in Pasighat, East Siang district. Demonstrators, identified as part of a youth group called 'Gen Z,' reportedly set fire to the NHPC office and a police station, while also vandalizing and looting the residences of two local MLAs and the state BJP president. The unrest lasted for nearly nine hours, resulting in injuries to more than 40 police personnel due to stone-pelting incidents.

The violence erupted after a peaceful 12-hour bandh organized by the Adi Baane Kebang United and other groups concluded at 5 PM. Although the bandh was not observed in the Pasighat area, tensions flared as the 'Gen Z' group began their protest. The East Siang district administration responded by imposing restrictions on public gatherings in Pasighat, Mebo, and Ruksin to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.

According to police reports, the unrest began when the youth group blocked the Pasighat-Boleng highway, demanding an indefinite dharna without a clear agenda. As the situation deteriorated, the group became increasingly unruly, with some members reportedly intoxicated. Police attempted to manage the situation with minimal force, resorting to tear gas as the crowd grew violent, pelting stones at law enforcement and damaging police vehicles.

The implications of this unrest extend beyond immediate property damage, as it raises concerns about public safety and governance in Arunachal Pradesh. The state government, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, expressed deep concern over the events and has offered to engage in dialogue with the protesting groups to address their grievances.

Looking ahead, the local administration has implemented restrictions effective from 5 PM on October 24, which will remain until further notice. The situation remains tense, and authorities are closely monitoring developments to ensure public safety and restore order in the affected regions.
