In a notable display of political balancing, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay met with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for coffee and lunch, followed by a metro ride and temple visit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi just a day later. This sequence of events underscores Vijay's efforts to maintain a delicate relationship between his coalition partner, the Congress, and the BJP-led central government.
PM Modi's visit to Chennai was marked by the inauguration of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II and the laying of foundation stones for various projects totaling approximately ₹13,000 crore. During this visit, Vijay accompanied Modi on a metro ride and a ceremonial visit to a temple located on the IIT Madras campus, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of their engagement despite underlying political tensions.
The contrasting nature of these engagements comes at a time when the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is facing pressure from his own party, the Tamil Maanila Congress (TVK), which has been vocal about the possibility of Vijay running for Prime Minister. While the TVK claims that the call for 'Vijay for PM' is not an official stance, some ministers have publicly questioned why Tamil Nadu should not aspire to produce a Prime Minister, reflecting the growing ambitions within the party.
Despite his critical stance towards the BJP, Vijay's role as Chief Minister necessitates cooperation with the central government on various issues, including funding and development projects. His administration has refrained from framing its relationship with the Centre as adversarial, even in the wake of Rahul Gandhi's recent arrest, avoiding direct criticism of the BJP. Electricity Minister Nirmal Kumar articulated this approach, stating that the party prioritizes the welfare of Tamil Nadu over political rivalries.
Looking ahead, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is poised for significant shifts. The Congress-DMK alliance has previously dominated elections, and a potential partnership between the TVK and Congress in the 2029 elections could alter the dynamics in the state and strengthen the Congress's position nationally. As Vijay navigates these complex relationships, he must balance the aspirations of the Congress with his own political ambitions, all while maintaining a working relationship with PM Modi, whom he regards as an ideological opponent.
