In a significant escalation of military support, the United Kingdom has dispatched RAF Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to conduct defensive air patrols against the Houthi rebels from Yemen. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting announced this development on Tuesday, stating that the air-to-air refueling mission has also been extended by an additional 90 days to enhance operational capabilities.
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Typhoon jets will engage in defensive counter-air operations, focusing on safeguarding Saudi cities, civilians, and critical infrastructure from missile and drone assaults launched by Houthi forces. Streeting emphasized that the British aircraft will not be involved in offensive strikes against Houthi positions, maintaining a defensive posture in the region.
In addition to the fighter jets, Britain plans to send a military transport aircraft and an unspecified number of military advisors to assist Saudi forces. This move follows Britain's previous commitment to provide in-air refueling support for Saudi aircraft engaged in operations against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, highlighting the UK's ongoing military collaboration with Saudi Arabia.
The deployment of the Typhoon jets comes at a time of heightened tensions in Yemen, where Houthi rebels have intensified their missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen's internationally recognized government. The British military presence in the Middle East, including facilities in Cyprus, Qatar, and Bahrain, underlines the UK's strategic commitment to regional security and its role in air and maritime operations.
Looking ahead, the UK’s military involvement in Saudi Arabia is expected to continue as the situation in Yemen evolves. The British government remains focused on reinforcing Saudi defenses against aerial threats, while also navigating the complexities of the ongoing conflict in the region.
