On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his re-election bid, just nine days before the critical parliamentary elections in Israel. This election marks the first national vote following the Hamas attack in 2023, which has significantly influenced the political landscape.
In his endorsement, Trump lauded Netanyahu's leadership and his collaboration with the United States, particularly in addressing threats from Iran. He referred to Netanyahu as a "Great Warrior Prime Minister" and highlighted his role as a key ally in promoting peace and stability in the region. Trump's remarks were shared in a detailed post on Truth Social directed at the Israeli populace, where he expressed his complete support for Netanyahu's candidacy.
Trump's message included a stark warning about the implications of a leadership change in Israel. He stated that if the country were to elect a leader other than Netanyahu, it could jeopardize America's commitment to countering Iranian aggression. He asserted, "If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so."
The upcoming election, scheduled for October 27, will determine the composition of the Knesset, Israel's parliament, which consists of 120 members. To secure a majority, a coalition of at least 61 seats is typically necessary. With around 7.33 million eligible voters, representing 71.15% of Israel's population, the election is expected to draw significant participation. In the previous election held in 2022, voter turnout was approximately 70.63%.
Netanyahu, who leads the Likud party, faces competition from various opposition parties, including the Yashar party led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. This election is particularly pivotal as it follows the recent conflict in Gaza, which has heightened tensions in the region and could influence voter sentiment as Israelis head to the polls.
