In a significant political development, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he is open to engaging in trilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump suggested that Ukraine might benefit from appointing a different negotiator to represent its interests in these talks, indicating that he believes the current approach has not yielded substantial progress.
Trump's comments come in the wake of discussions from the Kremlin about the possibility of a trilateral meeting, which could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 18-19 in Shenzhen, China. Although the meeting has not been officially confirmed, the dialogue around it reflects the ongoing complexities of international relations concerning the Ukraine war.
During his remarks, Trump emphasized that the primary focus of the proposed discussions would be on nuclear weapons and denuclearization, while also leaving room for trade and other pertinent issues. He stated, "If President Xi wants to have it, I'd have it," underscoring his willingness to engage in dialogue that could potentially lead to a resolution of the conflict.
Trump also reiterated his criticisms of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting that the Ukrainian leader should have pursued a settlement with Russia much earlier in the conflict. He remarked, "Zelenskyy doesn’t know what he’s talking about," and expressed that a change in negotiators might be necessary for Ukraine to achieve a more favorable outcome. This criticism comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine regarding American policies towards Russia, including the easing of certain sanctions.
As discussions about the potential summit continue, questions remain regarding Ukraine's representation in these negotiations. Zelenskyy has indicated that a trilateral meeting involving Putin could also be held in the United States during the G20 summit in December. However, confirmations from both Moscow and Washington are still pending, leaving the future of these diplomatic efforts uncertain.
