The violence in Manipur has escalated since May 2023, with recent incidents of arson and civilian casualties.

In a tragic incident on Monday morning, three people lost their lives in an ambush by suspected militants while they were collecting firewood along the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts in Manipur. The attack occurred around 7 AM in Khongbal Sunurok Uyok, near Nongshum village, prompting immediate protests from the local community who placed the victims' bodies outside the residence of Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh in Imphal.

The deceased have been identified as Arubam Ronil (35), Lairenlakpam Inaobi (51), and Kshetrimayum Sushil (32). While Ronil and Inaobi died at the scene, Sushil later succumbed to his injuries in a private hospital. Three other individuals sustained injuries, and officials reported that three more individuals remain unaccounted for following the attack. Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden barrage of gunfire as the victims were loading firewood.

The protests intensified as locals expressed their outrage over the violence, leading to the blocking of roads and the shutdown of markets across Imphal. In response to the unrest, police deployed tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Following the protests, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh visited the injured but did not address the media regarding the incident.

This attack is part of a troubling pattern of violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. In recent days, there have been reports of arson targeting homes in the Kuki community, with officials confirming that at least 15 houses were set ablaze in Chassad village. The ongoing violence has forced many civilians to seek refuge in nearby forests and military camps. Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the violence, calling for heightened vigilance from security forces to protect civilians and their properties.

As the situation remains tense, authorities have deployed a joint team of the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, and local police to restore order in the affected areas. The community's anger and fear continue to grow as they demand justice and security in a region that has seen too much bloodshed in recent months.
