Three Killed in Manipur Ambush, Protests Erupt Outside CM's Residence
Violence in Manipur escalates as three villagers are shot dead, leading to protests demanding action from the state government.
Three Meitei villagers were killed in an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur.
Protesters carried two bodies to the Chief Minister's residence, leading to clashes with security forces.
The incident highlights ongoing ethnic tensions and violence in the region, with over 50 casualties reported in recent months.
In a tragic incident on Monday morning, three Meitei villagers lost their lives in an ambush by suspected militants in a forest area along the Imphal East-Kangpokpi border. This attack has reignited ethnic tensions in Manipur's valley districts, stemming from allegations of a breach of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement by an armed Kuki group. The victims were part of a firewood collection group when they were targeted.
Following the ambush, protesters took the bodies of two of the deceased to a sit-in demonstration outside the official residence of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Imphal. The crowd remained steadfast in their demands for justice until security personnel intervened with tear gas to disperse them. The police subsequently moved the bodies to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for examination.
The killings mark a significant escalation in violence involving the Meitei community, the majority ethnic group in the state, since the last reported incident on January 21, where a Meitei man was shot dead by suspected Kuki assailants. The ongoing violence has resulted in over 50 deaths in the region over the past eight months, as tensions between Kuki-Zo militant groups and Naga outfits continue to rise.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called on both the state and central governments to revoke the SoO with the Kuki-Zo militant factions, citing a need for urgent action to restore peace. The recent violence has not only affected the local communities but has also raised concerns about the broader implications for stability in Manipur.
As the situation unfolds, Chief Minister Singh has convened an evening meeting to review security measures and has instructed the administration to enhance security in vulnerable areas. The state government faces mounting pressure to address the escalating violence and restore order in Manipur, with community leaders urging immediate and effective responses to prevent further loss of life.
